Ignoring The Intimate
John 13:12-17
"So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [b]know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."
Walk-Line: Some may say that I am reaching, when I say that when Jesus washed the disciples feet in the upper room, He emphasized the importance of our intimate relationships with one another. When Jesus said: "You also ought to wash one another's feet," it was not just to practice a humble means of service to others, but also a symbol of how intimate we are to be with one another. Of course intimacy is practiced in the marriage relationship, and with our children, and they with one another, But also in our relationship to those in our extended family, and those in our social circles. The washing of feet is a symbol of how we are to think of others before ourselves. In too many group settings, and activities, there are those who will be
neglected. In group activities, needs may not be met as in the the one on one, intimate relationships that we have. But I believe that Jesus knew, as we should come to know, that those intimate one on one relationships, help to build a stronger, more stable unity within the group, or family, and definitely in the Body of Christ. What is the purpose of the washing of feet?
It is a demonstration of humility and service.
A symbol of unselfish service and unity.
An act before our God as a means of love and worship. ___g/Patterson
